Geological Agency Reveals Causes of Volcanic Earthquake at Mount Talang in Solok

Monitoring of seismic activities at Mount Talang has shown a decline as of this morning. On April 9, 2025, between midnight and 6 AM, 17 occurrences were recorded.

Padang (ONLINE DAILY NEWS) – The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has reported volcanic earthquake activity following a series of earthquakes at Mount Talang in Solok Regency, West Sumatra (Sumbar). This indicates the migration or movement of magma from deeper magma chambers to the surface.

“Seismic monitoring at Mount Talang has shown a decline this morning, and on April 9, 2025, between midnight and 6 AM, 17 occurrences were recorded,” stated Muhammad Wafid, Head of the Geological Agency, in a written statement received in Padang on Wednesday.

Muhammad Wafid mentioned that the tectonic earthquake that occurred on April 8, 2025, at 5:23 PM with a magnitude of 4.2, located 20 kilometers southeast of Solok Regency, was a shallow earthquake.

Even the tremors of this shallow tectonic earthquake were felt at Mount Talang’s Volcano Observation Station at an intensity of IV MMI. Following this event, until midnight, related agencies recorded 115 earthquake occurrences.

“The number of deep volcanic earthquakes recorded on April 8 was 101 occurrences,” he noted.

Separately, Suaidi Ahadi, Head of the Padang Panjang Geophysics Station, stated that three earthquake events centered in Solok Regency on Tuesday afternoon (8/4) were due to the shifting or activity of the Suliti Segment.

According to BMKG data, the first earthquake occurred at 5:23 PM with a magnitude of 4.2, located at a coordinate of 0.98 South Latitude, 100.71 East Longitude, or 20 kilometers southeast of Solok Regency, at a depth of one kilometer. Sixteen minutes later, Solok Regency was again shaken by an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.4.

Subsequently, BMKG reported another aftershock at 6:14 PM with a magnitude of 2.6. The third earthquake was recorded at a depth of five kilometers with coordinates of 0.99 South Latitude, 100.70 East Longitude, or 21 kilometers southeast of Solok Regency.
